Team, Individual Wins Highlight Bulldog Opener
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Butler opened its 2014 outdoor track and field season with a mix of team and individual success at the Bulldog Opener on Saturday, March 22. The Bulldogs picked up five team wins in the women's competition and three in the men's in the multi-team meet at the Davey Complex.
Junior Nicole Hudec paced Butler's women with two individual wins and one relay victory. She won the women's 100 meter dash in 12.89, and she captured the long jump with a leap of 17-07.50. She also joined teammates Kelly Davidson, Kiley Shelley and Bria Booker to capture the 4 X 400 meter relay.
Senior Kirsty Legg, making her 2014 debut, also picked up a pair of victories. She won the women's 1500 meter run in 4:29.41 and then came back to capture the women's 800 meter run in 2:18.48.
Shelley joined Hudec and Legg as a multiple winner with a victory in the women's 100 meter hurdles in 16.25.
The Bulldogs also picked up a victory in the women's javelin from freshman Samantha Jensen. She placed first with a throw of 73-01.25.
In the men's competition, Butler picked up first place finishes from seniors Matthew Schumacker, Andrew Wallace and Nigel Spears and sophomore Dominique Stephens. Schumacker won the men's 400 hurdles in 58.98, while Wallace claimed the men's 800 meter run in 1:57.10. Spears placed first in the men's long jump with a leap of 21-07.75 and Stephens won the men's shot put with a throw of 41-11.50.
Butler's women wound up 5-0 in the team competition, while Butler's men posted a 3-2 record.
