INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler will open the 2013 cross country season at the Bradley Intercollegiate Meet in Peoria, Ill., on Friday, Sept. 6. Among the teams the Bulldogs will face at the opening competition are DePaul, IUPUI, IPFW, Marquette, Western Michigan and host Bradley.
Butler won't enter its full varsity squads for both the men and women in the meet, but Head Coach Matt Roe says everyone is eager to get the 2013-2014 campaign underway.
"We are looking forward to starting our season," said Roe, who guided the Bulldogs to men's and women's championships in the Atlantic 10 Conference last year. "We have a lot of new athletes on our team who are eager to put the Butler singlet on for the first time. We also have a handful of returners who are excited to get a race under their belt as they set their sights on a successful 2013 campaign."
The race distances at Bradley are not the classic 5k and 8k; instead, the women will run 3 miles and the men 4 miles - but there are a handful of Butler runners to keep an eye on:
On the women's side, freshman Colleen Weatherford was First Team All-State at the IHSAA Track and Field State Championships and makes her collegiate debut at Bradley, as does junior Katie Good, who placed 31st at the 2013 British National XC Championships. All-American Kirsty Legg returns to the Butler uniform after redshirting the 2013 track season, while All-American Katie Clark will sit out this first meet.
For the men, sophomore Luke Zygmunt - one of the fastest in the nation over 1500 meters this past track season - will also make his cross country debut after redshirting as a freshman. The men will only enter a team of five runners at Bradley, while the women will run about a dozen athletes.
The Bulldogs are heading into their first season in the BIG EAST, which figures to rank among the top cross country conferences in Division I.
