A strong effort by newcomer Matt Lawder highlighted the season-opening performance of the Butler men's and women's cross country teams at the Purdue Open on Friday, Aug. 31. The Bulldogs competed with host Purdue in a non-scoring meet at the varsity cross country course on the Purdue campus.
Lawder, running in his first meet for the Bulldogs, paced the field in the men's 6K race. He finished first with a time of 19:21.63, placing three seconds ahead of runner-up Matt DeSilva of Purdue. Butler freshman Madison Roeder came in third in 19:29.77, while senior Kenton Wories was fourth in19:30.33. Freshman Nathan Tavenor came in sixth for the Bulldogs in 20:11.87.
In the women's 4K race, senior Aubrey Smith was Butler's top finisher with a time of 16:16.05, She placed 18th, while teammate Kari Splitt came in 20th in 16:38.24. Vanessa Garlick placed 22nd for the Bulldogs in 16:51.46, while Alicia Dixon was 24th in 16:58.72.
Butler will take a week off before competing in the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet in West Lafayette on Sept. 14.
