The Butler men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2007 Great Lakes Regional in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 10, with an eye on qualifying for the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship. The men's 10K race will start at 11 a.m. (ET) on the Indiana University Cross Country Championship Course. The women's 6K race will follow at 12:15 a.m.
The top two teams at each regional championship meet automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship, which will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute on Nov. 19. At-large teams will be selected by the NCAA on Nov. 11. In addition, the top four individuals not on a qualifying team will be automatic qualifiers for the national meet. Individuals must place in the "Top 25" at their regional meet to be considered for the national meet.
First-year Butler head coach Matt Roe will take a pair of championship squads to the regional meet. The Butler men won their 10th straight Horizon League championship on Oct. 27, sweeping the top five individual positions. Butler's women had three of the top five individuals in the league championship, while capturing their sixth straight conference title.
"We're running really well right now," said Roe, who was named Horizon League Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. "Our training has been going well. We're probably going to have to finish fourth or better on both sides to have a shot at the national meet."
Butler's men will be led by junior Andy Baker, who captured the individual championship at the Horizon League meet. He was one of five Butler runners to be named first team All-League. The other All-League runners who will compete for the Bulldogs this weekend are senior Sam Jacobs, junior Tommy Davies, freshman Matt Lawder and senior Kent Wories. Rounding out the Butler squad for the regional meet will be freshmen Nathan Tavenor and Madison Roeder. None of the seven runners competed on the Butler team that placed third at last year's regional meet.
The Butler women's team will be led by first team All-League performers Genni Gardner and Claire Holme. Gardner was runner-up at the Horizon League Championship, while Holme placed third. They'll be joined by junior Rachel Gibbs and sophomore Marbeth Shiell, both All-League runners, plus seniors Isabelle Stoate, Aubrey Smith and . Holme placed 16th and Gardner finished 26th at last year's Great Lakes Regional Meet, while helping Butler to a fourth place team finish. Shiell finished 45th at last year's regional.
Butler's men are currently ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region, while Butler's women are ranked 10th.
