Butler Drops 12-2 Game vs. Youngstown State


INDIANAPOLIS – Youngstown State scored nine runs in the first four innings of the game and went on to defeat the Butler baseball team, 12-2, Friday afternoon at Bulldog Park. Junior Grant Fillipitch led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs, including a solo home run. The game was the Horizon League opener for both teams.

YSU’s Joe Iacobucci hit a two-run home run in the top of the 1st inning and the Penguins (9-8) took control of the ballgame. Leading 4-1 in the top of the 4th, YSU scored five times in the inning to go up 9-1.

Youngstown had a 12-1 lead when Fillipitch went deep to center in the bottom of the 8th inning. Fillipitch was BU’s bright spot on offense, as he got the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI double that scored junior Kyle Waggoner from first base. Fillipitch’s homer, his second of the season, came on a 1-1 pitch off Bill Turosky.

Junior Corey Moylan also was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. BU sent three pitchers to the mound, with junior Jared Wagoner taking the loss. Freshman Billy Laing threw 4.2 innings and Fillipitch worked a 1-2-3 9th inning for the Bulldogs.

Butler (6-12) will play two games vs. Youngstown State Saturday, March 27 beginning at noon. Sophomore Mike Hernandez and freshman Jared Earle will start on the mound for BU.
