INDIANAPOLIS – Butler scored nine runs in the bottom of the 5th inning en route to a 14-0 win over crosstown foe University of Indianapolis. Sophomore Nick Hladek led the Bulldogs with a 3-for-4 effort and freshman Bob Akin drove in three runs. Six BU pitchers combined on the shutout.
Like the weather, the Bulldogs have heated up late in April and now in May. Butler has won six of its last seven games and is scoring 10.8 runs per game during those seven contests.
After an RBI double by junior Michael Letzter, Akin’s two-run double in the bottom of the 4th gave the Dawgs an early 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs then put up the 9-spot the very next inning, collecting eight singles and sending 14 batters to the plate. Twelve straight batters reached base. Junior Luke Duncan, who led off the inning, smacked a two-run single as the Bulldogs batted around. The next three batters – Kyle Waggoner, Corey Moylan and Kevin Crane – each followed with an RBI single before the inning would come to a close.
Junior Dom Silvestri (2-2) was credited with the win. He worked 3.0 shutout innings and allowed just two baserunners. Freshman Billy Laing threw a pair of scoreless innings while four other pitchers worked one inning apiece.
Duncan, Moylan and Crane each had two hits and two RBIs. Waggoner and sophomore Griffin Richeson each scored two runs.
Butler (16-22) will play at Illinois Wednesday, May 5 at 6 p.m.
