VALPARAISO, Ind. - Butler split a doubleheader at Valpo Saturday afternoon, winning game one in extra innings before losing in the nightcap.
Junior Corey Moylan went 3-for-5 in the first game and had the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning. With the score tied 1-1 after nine innings, junior Kyle Waggoner walked to lead off the first extra inning. He took third on a single by junior Grant Fillipitch and then scored when Moylan stroked a single to right.
Sophomore Mike Hernandez (4-3) had perhaps his finest day, going all 10 innings. He allowed just one run and scattered eight hits while striking out six. The only run off Hernandez came on a sac fly in the 6th inning.
Senior Kyle Schultz went 2-for-2 with two walks in game one. BU's first run came in the top of the 2nd when Moylan scored on a sac fly by junior Michael Letzer. The Crusaders answered in the bottom of the 6th.
That was it for offense in the first game. Valpo's Bryce Shafer took the loss despite pitching a gem, going nine innings and striking out 11.
Valparaiso jumped on Butler early, scoring three times in the bottom of the 1st. The Crusaders added a run in the 3rd before Butler would get on the board.
Moylan doubled and scored and sophomore Brian Padove smacked a double to score freshman Andrew Eckhardt to make it 4-2.
Valpo (19-27, 7-7 HL) added two runs in the bottom of the 5th and another in the 6th.
Moylan led the Bulldogs with two hits and a run scored.
Butler (18-24, 8-11 HL) will play at IPFW Wednesday, May 12. BU's next league play is Friday, May 14 at Milwaukee.
