Home Away From Home: BU Beats IPFW, 8-3

XENIA, Ohio – Senior Grant Fillipitch went 3-for-4 with a double and eight Butler pitchers combined on a solid effort as the Bulldog baseball team picked up an 8-3 win over IPFW Tuesday night. The game, a Butler home contest, was played at all-turf Athletes In Action Stadium just southeast of Dayton, Ohio.

Senior Luke Duncan drove in two runs and senior Kyle Waggoner, this week's Horizon League Player of the Week, added two hits. Junior Mike Hernandez (1-1) was credited with the win.

Butler (2-3) was helped early by two IPFW errors, helping the Dawgs to a sizable lead early in the game. After Fillipitch's RBI double in the 1st made it 1-0, IPFW committed two errors that led to three Butler runs in the bottom of the 2nd.

Senior catcher Michael Letzter had an RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd to extend the lead to 5-0. After an IPFW pitching change, Duncan smacked a two-run single and Butler led 7-0, which stood until the Mastodons scored three in the top of the 6th.

Butler's final run came in the bottom of the 6th. Sophomore Andrew Eckhardt singled and stole second and scored on a single down the left-field line by Waggoner.

IPFW (0-1) was led by Austin Bowers with two RBIs. A.J. Christensen added two hits for the Mastodons, who played their first game of the season after having their series against Pittsburgh last weekend cancelled.

Butler is scheduled to play a four-game set vs. Oakland this weekend, March 5-6. Schedule updates will be posted on ButlerSports.com as they become available.
