NILES, Ohio - After posting a convincing win Friday, the Butler baseball team fell twice to Youngstown State Saturday afternoon. The Penguins won the first game, 5-1, before taking a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Bulldogs, who beat YSU 15-1 in the first game of the series, had a 3-0 lead in the final game. An RBI double by Pat Gelwicks keyed a three-run 4th inning for the Bulldogs. Butler led 3-1 heading into the 8th inning before Youngstown State stole the game. YSU's Phil Lipari reached on a fielder's choice and scored to make it 3-2. The Penguins two singles and a double to start the bottom of the 9th, and Lipari again delivered, slapping an RBI single to right to win the game.
The Bulldogs were stymied in the day's first game by Youngstown State's Phil Klein. The YSU pitcher struck out 10 and allowed just four hits over 7.0 innings. Nick Schroth and Joe Iacobucci each had three hits for the Penguins.
Butler (12-15) will play at Dayton Tuesday, April 12 before hosting a three-game series vs. Lawrence April 16-17.
