DAYTON, Ohio - Butler had nearly twice as many hits as Dayton, but the Bulldog baseball team couldn't push across a run in a 4-0 loss at UD's Time Warner Cable Stadium. Three pitchers combined on the shutout for the Flyers.
The Bulldogs managed seven hits, including a 2-for-3 effort from senior Luke Duncan, and held the Flyers to four. But it was Dayton who plated three runs in the bottom of the 3rd and an unearned run in the 6th inning to win the game.
Dayton (17-16) scored its first run on a Butler throwing error on a sac bunt. The next batter, Brian Blasik, lifted a sac fly to right to make it 2-0. After a one-out walk, UD scored another run on an RBI groundout.
BU put the leadoff man on in the 5th and 7th innings and had runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 6th, but couldn't find the timely hit.
Dayton made it 4-0 when it scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the 6th.
Freshman Marcos Calderon (0-2) started and threw a solid game, allowing two hits and one earned run over 4.0 innings. Sophomore Jared Earle and freshman Brad Schnitzer combined for 4.0 innings with no earned runs allowed.
Blasik had a triple and sac fly to lead UD. Tim Bury (1-2) got the win, throwing 5.2 shutout innings. He struck out five and walked two.
The Bulldogs (12-16) will host a three-game set against Lawrence University this weekend April 16-17.
