FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Five Butler pitchers combined on a five-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead the Butler baseball team to a 3-1 win at IPFW. Junior Mike Hoscheit went 2-for-3 and scored two runs to lead Butler.
Sophomore Joel Leichty (2-0) got the win and was one of four pitchers to work 2.0 innings in the victory. Leichty, sophomores Kyle Kramp and Jared Earle and freshman Jeff Gunter each worked a pair of innings and had multiple strikeouts as the Bulldogs allowed just one baserunner to reach third base. IPFW's lone run came on a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th. Junior Ryan Salvino also threw a shutout inning of relief.
The Bulldogs (19-23) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd when Hoscheit singled and then scored on a sac fly by senior Jack Krause. BU led 2-0 in the 4th inning when senior Corey Moylan walked, stole second and scored on a double by freshman Zach Sizemore.
After IPFW's Kristian Gayday homered to make it 2-1, Hoscheit provided an insurance run by walking and scoring in the 8th inning.
Sophomore Andrew Eckhardt also had two hits for Butler.
Two IPFW players - Malcolm White and Will Faulkner - each had two hits to account for four of the Mastodons' five hits.
Butler will play four Horizon League games at home this weekend, two on Friday, May 13 vs. Youngstown State and then two more Sunday, May 15 against Milwaukee. BU's seniors will be honored for Senior Day during the Sunday doubleheader.
