Sophomore Patrick Gelwicks hit a 3-run homer and Jeff Thomas' Gray team defeated Eric Storey's Blue squad, 4-0, to win the Butler Fall World Series.
After scoring an unearned run to go up 1-0 in the fourth inning, Gelwicks broke the game open with a shot to center in the sixth. Mike Hernandez faced the minimum six batters in his two innings of work for the Gray.
Kyle Kramp worked out of jams in both of his innings, benefitting from a great running catch in center field by Marcos Calderon in the third and then a solid play by shortstop Lucas Calderon to get out of a bases-loaded situation in the fourth. Billy Laing pitched a scoreless fifth and Dom Silvestri was dominant in the final two innings of the game.
Nick Hladek and Marco Caponi each hit doubles for the winning side, while Mike Letzter had a double and Corey Moylan added a single for the Blue.
Butler players will begin their offseason weight training program later this week and the team's annual "Long Ball" fundraiser will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 at Bulldog Park. For a $10 donation, fans are invited to take batting practice swings off of a Butler player or coach. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be provided.
