INDIANAPOLIS - Senior outfielder Kyle Waggoner has been named Horizon League Player of the Week after batting .412 with seven RBIs over Butler's four games this past weekend. It is his first career weekly honor for Waggoner, who was selected to the league's all-newcomer team last spring.
Waggoner, a Brownsburg, Ind., native, finished 7-for-17 with seven RBIs and one walk during Butler's season-opening swing through the Carolinas. Butler finished the trip on Sunday with a 10-9 win over USC-Upstate, a game where Waggoner went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs driven in. The previous day, the outfielder went 3-for-9 with five RBIs in a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb.
"Kyle had an outstanding opening weekend," head coach Steve Farley said. "He consistently hit the ball hard and played solid defense in left field. He's been a steady leader for our team."
Waggoner, in his second season with Butler after transferring from Indiana, hit .320 last season with 33 runs scored and a .384 on-base percentage.
Butler (1-3) has a four-game set scheduled against Oakland this weekend. BU also has a game schedule vs. IPFW, with a site and game time to be determined due to weather.
