Dawgs Edged In Season Opener At Fresno State
FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Griffin Richeson went 3-for-5 and senior righty Mike Hernandez threw 6.0 quality innings but Fresno State held on to beat the Butler baseball team 3-0. FSU's Tyler Linehan struck out 13 Bulldogs over 7.2 shutout innings.
Butler, although it couldn't plate a run against Linehan and FSU's relievers, did put the pressure on in the late innings. BU threatened in the 8th inning, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. A two-out walk by junior Jimmy Risi loaded the bases but Butler couldn't score a run.
In addition to a single in BU's late rally, Richeson also singled to lead off the game and hit a double to left-center in the top of the 3rd. Three other Bulldogs had one hit apiece.
Linehan scattered five hits and two walks in front of an announced crowd of 1,991. The lefty, who was drafted in the 14th round by Seattle out of high school, only allowed two Butler baserunners to reach 3rd base. He had six innings with multiple strikeouts.
Hernandez (0-1) was almost as good, limiting FSU to a pair of earned runs over 6.0 innings. He scattered five hits and three walks while fanning one. Senior lefty Brad Schnitzer pitched the final two innings, a pair of scoreless frames with four strikeouts.
Patrick Hutcheson homered in the 1st inning and scored two runs for Fresno State. Jordan Luplow added two hits for the host Bulldogs.
