FRESNO, Calif. - The Butler baseball team finished its four-game series with a 17-2 loss at Fresno State Sunday evening. Sophomore Marco Caponi homered in the 8th inning to lead the Bulldogs.
Fresno State scored once in the bottom of the 1st inning and then jumped on BU with five runs in the 3rd. A three-run triple by Chris Mariscal was the key hit in the inning. FSU scored eight more times in the game's three middle innings to lead 14-0.
Caponi, who subbed in for junior Lucas Calderon at second base, pulled a pitch from Chris Belleque down the left-field line for his first collegiate home run.
Junior Jared Earle was the bright spot on the mound for Butler. The right-hander pitched the 7th inning and struck out all three batters he faced.
Butler will play the next two weekends in Tennessee. BU is at UT-Martin for three games Feb. 25-26 and at Belmont on March 3-4.
