Trailing 3-2 for much of the afternoon, Gelwicks hit a bases-loaded double to right in the bottom of the 7th inning that turned out to be the game-winning hit. Haddad crushed a leadoff triple in the 8th and scored on a single by senior Mike Hoscheit to make Butler's lead 6-3.
IPFW scored once against junior closer Chase Byerly, but the Mastodons ran out of outs against the BU right-hander. Of Butler's five victories this season, Byerly has closed four. Freshman Eric Stout was the pitcher of record, picking up his first collegiate win.
Haddad, who lifted his season average to .375, doubled and scored in the 2nd inning and singled in the 3rd. The Butler catcher also scored two runs, his first multi-run game as a Bulldog. Sophomore Marcos Calderon had the double and also walked twice.
IPFW's Charles Weaver threw a solid game before falling victim to Gelwicks' game-winning double. Weaver worked 7.0 innings and struck out 11, but walked five and ended up allowing six runs.
Butler (5-7) has three more games against the Mastodons. BU will play a DH Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday.
