INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Nick Hladek hit a grand slam to lead the Butler baseball team to a 12-6 win over local foe Marian University on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs pounded the Knights in the middle innings for their eighth win of the season.
With BU trailing Marian 3-0, the Dawgs loaded the bases as Marian issued two walks and committed an error. Hladek then blasted a 3-2 pitch from Caleb Small out to left-center. It was his first homer of the year and the fifth of his career.
Butler wouldn't trail again for the rest of the day. MU tied the game 4-4 in the top of the 5th but the Bulldogs put crooked numbers on the board in each of the next three innings to break the game open.
Consecutive doubles by Hoscheit and Wojciechowski in the bottom of the 5th were the big shots as BU scored three times to go up 7-4. After Marian climbed to within 7-6, Butler scored twice on some sloppy Marian defense to lead 9-6.
The game's second rare and exciting play came in the bottom of the 7th when senior Griffin Richeson singled and stole home. Butler scored two other times in the inning to provide the final score.
Marian walked 12 batters and committed four errors on the day. The Knights actually got the better of the Dawgs until Hladek's slam in the 4th inning. MU finished with 13 hits to Butler's nine.
