Valpo Downs BU In Slugfest
INDIANAPOLIS - Valparaiso pounded out 20 hits and scored eight runs in the 3rd inning to defeat the Butler baseball team 15-7 on Saturday at Bulldog Park. Junior Jimmy Risi hit a home run and scored twice for the Bulldogs.
With Butler leading 2-0 early in the game, 12 Crusaders came to the plate in the 3rd. A three-run double by Billy Cribbs and a two-run single by Elliott Martin were the big blows for Valpo, who had seven hits and two stolen bases in the inning.
Cribbs and Martin each drove in another run in the 4th inning, where Valpo took an 11-2 lead. The Bulldogs consistently hit and were able to put runs on the board, but they had dug too large of a hole in the 3rd inning.
Martin and Cribbs were each 3-for-4 on the day and combined for seven RBIs. Three other Crusaders each drove in a pair of runs.
Risi slugged his third home run of the year, a shot to center field in the bottom of the 4th. He also walked and scored in the 6th. With Valparaiso leading 15-5, BU scraped across a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th. Valpo walked a batter and hit two more and senior Brian Padove delivered an RBI single up the middle. Junior Jack Dillon was plunked with a pitch, driving in the other run.
Padove was 2-for-2 on the day and sophomore Marcos Calderon went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Butler's seven runs came on just nine hits, an efficient day of baserunning and taking advantage of Valpo's mistakes.
Valpo's Kevin Wild earned the win, striking out six over 6.0 innings of work. He gave up five runs on six hits. Sophomore Will Schierholz was statistically BU's best pitcher, working 3.1 frames in relief without allowing a run on his pitching line. Senior Ryan Salvino pitched a scoreless 9th.
Butler, which defeated Valpo in 10 innings on Friday, will concludes its series against the Crusaders Sunday, March 18 at 1 p.m.
