YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Senior Dom Silvestri, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, returned home and gave a solid start on the mound to give the Butler baseball team a 7-5 win over Youngstown State on Friday. Silvestri threw 6.0 innings for the win and improved to 3-0 on the year.
Silvestri, a fifth-year senior, scattered five hits and walked two. He struck out two and really only got into trouble in the 5th inning. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned.
Senior Mike Hoscheit homered and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs, who moved to 4-3 in league play. Freshman Michael Fries had two hits and scored twice and another freshman, Austin Miller, totaled two hits and a sac bunt.
Fries doubled and scored in the top of the 1st to give BU an early lead. Marcus Heath hit a two-run homer in the bottom half to put YSU ahead 2-1. In the top of the 4th, Hoscheit led off with a solo home run to left to key a three-run Butler inning. Miller had an RBI in the inning as BU claimed a 4-2 lead.
With the game tied 4-4, the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the top of the 6th. Singles by Miller and Fries got the inning started and senior Griffin Richeson doubled and scored. An RBI groundout and a sac fly out of the middle of the order put Butler ahead 7-4. Youngstown State got a run back in the bottom of the 8th but was shut down by Chase Byerly and didn't get any closer. Byerly got the final four outs for his league-leading seventh save.
Butler (14-13) tagged Penguin starter Blake Aquadro for seven runs over 5.0 innings. Aquadro struck out seven. Two YSU relievers pitched four shutout innings, but the damage by Butler had already been done.
Butler will play Saturday, March 31 at Youngstown State at 1 p.m. Junior Joel Leichty will get the start.
