Butler Beats Wright State 9-7
DAYTON, Ohio - The Butler baseball team struck for three runs in the top of the 9th to grab a 9-7 win at Wright State on Friday night. Junior Jimmy Risi went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead the Bulldogs, who snapped a five-game losing streak.
Senior Mike Hoscheit drove in three runs and two other Bulldogs - Bob Akin and Austin Miller - each had two hits. Butler took advantage of six walks issued by Wright State pitching, as four of those six batters ended up scoring a run.
The game was tight throughout and WSU had All-Horizon League closer Michael Schum on the mound with a 7-6 lead. With one out in the 9th, Schum walked pinch hitter Ryan Wojciechowski and Risi. He then plunked junior Radley Haddad to load the bases. Hoscheit then pushed an RBI groundout to the right side and Risi scored on a single by Miller. On that same play, Haddad scored on a throwing error and the Dawgs were up 9-7.
Junior Chase Byerly, who pitched 3.0 innings for the win, induced a 1-6-3 double play to slam the door shut in the bottom of the 9th. Byerly finished the game senior Brad Schnitzer started. Schnitzer went 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and keeping Butler in the ballgame.
WSU's Tristan Moore went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. He homered in the bottom of the 1st and hit three singles. Ryan Ashe was 2-for-5 with two runs driven in.
With BU leading 3-2, the Raiders got three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to go ahead 5-3. Risi lifted a two-run home run to right in the top of the 5th to tie the game. It was his 10th home run of the season. Butler scored another run in the 6th to go up 6-5.
One trend in Friday's win was Butler not making mistakes. The victory marked the sixth time this season Butler has played a whole game without committing an error. BU pitching also issued two walks. In the Wright State lineup, the 5-9 hitters were 3-for-18 and scored one run. The same spots in BU's lineup went 6-for-19 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Butler and Wright State will continue their league series Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. Senior Dom Silvestri will start for Butler against WSU's Taylor Braun.
