INDIANAPOLIS - Youngstown State scored four runs with two outs in the top of the 6th to edge the Butler baseball team 9-7 on Sunday. Jason Shirley's two-run double was the key hit as YSU won the weekend series.
With two outs in the 6th, Jeremy Banks and Marcus Heath walked and Shirley smacked a double to left. Shirley scored moments later and then Jack Graham hit an RBI single to give Youngstown State a 6-5 lead.
YSU extended the lead to 9-5 when four straight Penguins singled to key a three-run 8th inning. Butler got two runs in the 9th to make it close before YSU's Nic Manuppelli got the final two outs via strikeouts.
Butler led for most of the game, scoring three times in the bottom of the 2nd. BU led 5-2 before Youngstown State scored the four key runs in the 6th inning.
BU, despite losing two of three to Youngstown State, still holds a two-game lead on the Penguins in the Horizon League standings with two weekends remaining. Butler is at home against Milwaukee next weekend, the final homestand of the season.
