INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Pat Gelwicks had three hits and a pair of newcomers added some extra-base hits as the Butler baseball team won a 12-inning exhibition over the Ontario Blue Jays, 11-2. The Blue Jays are an elite travel squad from Canada.
Gelwicks led the Bulldogs with three hits and Butler got an offensive lift from a pair of transfers. Lucas Calderon, an infielder from Saint Louis University, went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Jimmy Risi, from Muscatine C.C., also went 2-for-3 and doubled.
Six Bulldog pitchers saw action in the exhibition.
“Playing the Bluejays was a nice opportunity for us. Over 12 innings we didn’t commit any errors and our pitching staff only walked three batters. We’ve had good competition in our intrasquad scrimmages, but there is a different feel when you put on the Butler uniform and have parents and fans in the stands.
"Our coaching staff was pleased with what we saw and we were able to identify some areas where we need to get better.”
Butler will play an exhibition vs. Taylor Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
