NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior Chase Byerly was named Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week after saving three Butler victories at VCU over the weekend. He shares the honor with La Salle's Pat Christensen.
Byerly, a third team Academic All-American last year, pitched 4.0 hitless innings and closed the door on each victory of Butler's sweep at VCU over the weekend. He saved the first game, a 6-4 Butler win, by pitching a flawless 9th inning in 10 pitches. The two teams played a doubleheader on Saturday, with Butler winning 4-3 and 7-4. Byerly pitched the 9th in the first game and worked two innings in the finale.
The Warsaw, Ind., native, who set the school's single-season saves record last year, has preserved four BU wins so far this season. He currently has a 2.55 ERA over 17.2 innings pitched. He has 16 strikeouts against three walks.
In addition to Byerly and Christensen, Xavier's Vinny Nittoli and Alex Kelly of Saint Louis were the conference's players of the week. Brett Lang from Charlotte was rookie of the week.
Butler and Byerly are scheduled to play at St. Bonaventure next weekend March 28-30. Tuesday's game vs. Wabash has been postponed.
