No. 19 Indiana Finishes Butler Sweep

Pat Guinane

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Butler baseball team hosted No. 19 Indiana on Sunday, falling 10-3. The win for IU completed a three-game weekend sweep.

Indiana (29-8) pounded 16 hits and took advantage of three Butler errors. Leading 1-0 in the top of the 2nd, the Hoosiers found three runs, the third coming after a dropped flyball in the outfield. Kyle Schwarber had a two-run single in the 2nd and Indiana led 4-0. Butler starter Billy Laing did not make it out of the 2nd.

Senior Pat Gelwicks smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the 2nd to after Jack Dillon and Patrick Guinane reached. Senior Radley Haddad doubled in the inning.

However, Indiana's 6-foot-10 starter Aaron Slegers settled down after that and ended up working 6.0 innings before being chased out when Guinane tripled and Lucas Calderon doubled to start the 7th. Slegers scattered eight hits and, oddly, didn't walk or strikeout any batters.

Senior lefty Kevin Lenkman gave a good long relief effort for Butler, giving 4.2 innings and striking out four. He gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, entering in the 2nd inning.

Dustin DeMuth and Casey Smith each had three hits for Indiana, which came into the weekend on a four-game losing streak. DeMuth had a pair of RBI singles and Schwarber scored twice and drove in three runs.

Guinane tripled and scored in the 6th inning to highlight his 3-for-4 day. He scored two runs and led the Bulldogs with five hits over the weekend. Junior Marcos Calderon went 2-for-3.

Indiana's first seven runs all came with two outs. IU totaled 42 hits over the weekend and scored nine runs per game.

The Bulldogs will play five games - all at home - in the upcoming week. Wabash and Northern Kentucky are scheduled to come to Butler in the mid-week and BU hosts Fordham in conference play April 26-28.
