INDIANAPOLIS - In between rain delays and tarp pulls, the Butler baseball team squeezed in a 10-2 win over Wabash at Bulldog Park on Wednesday.
BU jumped on Wabash early for seven runs in the first two innings. After junior Marcos Calderon led off the game with a single, Bartolone crushed the first pitch he saw over the right-field fence for a 2-0 Butler lead. Freshman Mike Kseniak scored later in the inning to make it 3-0.
Butler scored four times in the bottom of the 2nd, with a stretch of four straight hits keying the rally. Caponi led off with a double and that was followed by a pair of singles. Calderon then doubled and advanced to third on an error. Kseniak scored Calderon with an RBI groundout to extend Butler's lead to 7-0.
With varying strength of rain falling, Wabash found its rhythm and recorded a few scoreless innings. The Little Giants found two runs in the top of the 5th to cut the lead to 7-2. Tyler Owensby's RBI double was the key hit in the inning.
In the bottom of the 6th, Bartolone smacked an RBI single and Caponi and sophomore Austin Miller each singled and scored. Miller pushed an RBI single through the right side in the 8th to complete the scoring.
Tyler Hampton and Christian Vukas each had two hits for Wabash (13-19). There was a 28-minute rain delay in the bottom of the 7th. The game, set for a 3:30 start, started at 4:20 due early-afternoon rain.
Butler is scheduled to play Northern Kentucky at home Wednesday afternoon. BU already defeated NKU twice earlier this season.
