NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman Nick Bartolone was picked as Atlantic 10 Baseball Rookie of the Week after helping the Butler baseball team to a 5-0 record last week.
Bartolone, a native of Lafayette, Ind., batted 6-for-16 (.375) with three runs, a homer two doubles and five RBIs. With Bartolone playing in all five games and starting four, the Bulldogs collected wins over Wabash and Northern Kentucky before sweeping a league series over Fordham.
The freshman left-hander started his week by hitting his first career home run, a two-run shot in BU's 10-2 win over Wabash College. He finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs against Wabash. The next day, he came off the bench for an RBI pinch-hit single.
Bartolone then went 3-for-10 with two doubles in the Fordham series. He went 2-for-3, scored twice and walked twice in Saturday's 8-7 extra-inning win over the Rams.
The Bulldog freshman was named the league's rookie of the week at the same time Mike Vigliarolo of Saint Louis was player of the week and pitchers from Xavier (Jon Richard) and Saint Louis (Clay Smith) were tabbed co-pitchers of the week.
Bartolone, who is batting .357 in 28 at-bats this season, and the Bulldogs will play at Bellarmine Tuesday, April 30 and then travel to Charlotte for a weekend A-10 series.
