Charlotte Snaps Butler's Win Streak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Butler baseball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end on Friday, as the Bulldogs lost 6-1 at Charlotte.

The two teams entered their weekend series with identical 10-5 A-10 records. The win for Charlotte lifted the 49ers to within a game of second place in the conference standings. Charlotte is also second in the A-10 with 27 overall wins.

Tyler Barnette (4-3) scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings and allowed a single run. Barnette's first six frames were all zeroes on the scoreboard. Only four baserunners reached as far as third base against Barnette.

Consecutive doubles in the bottom of the 1st put the 49ers ahead 1-0 with two outs. The next batter, Justin Seager, hit an RBI single to make it 2-0. A walk and an error led to Charlotte taking a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

A triple by JJ Elsener in the 4th was the big hit as BU fell behind 5-0. Seager smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the 5th to extend the lead to 6-0. Butler's lone run came after senior Pat Gelwicks doubled and scored on a double play in the top of the 7th.

Gelwicks and senior Lucas Calderon went 2-for-4 for BU. Junior Marco Caponi went 2-for-3. Sophomore Kyle Allen gave 3.1 shutout innings of relief, allowing just two hits.

Butler (23-19, 10-6) will play Saturday afternoon at Hayes Stadium. Kyle Kramp will start for the Bulldogs, opposite Charlotte's John Hamilton.
