MACON, Ga. – The Bulldogs took a 5-0 loss at Mercer on Wednesday afternoon, moving their overall record to 5-9. The close game opened up in the bottom of the seventh innings as Mercer pushed three runs across home plate by recording three hits.
The seventh inning was the turning point on Wednesday as Mercer recorded a sweep over Butler in the two-game series. Massi led off the inning with a single. He advanced into scoring position by stealing second base.
Butler picked up their first out of the inning after Will Schierholz got Backlund to fly out to center. Schierholz was quickly replaced on the mound after walking Young. Massi was also able to advance to third after a passed ball with Schierholz still on the hill.
Billy Laing entered the game to pick up the pieces from the BU bullpen. An RBI bunt single scored the first run of the inning and a two RBI single from Lewis gave the Bears a 5-0 cushion. Laing got Butler out of the inning by striking out the final two batters, each were looking.
Gunner Johnson took the loss on the mound as the BU starter. He tossed 5.1 innings and struck out three batters before being replaced on the hill by Schierholz. Mercer used two arms in the game to limit Butler to just four hits.
Austin Lord gave up three of the hits in seven innings of work. He struck out three and didn't walk a single batter to earn the win (1-0). Ben Lumsden finished the game on the mound by throwing the final two innings.
Michael Fries, Will Amador, Ryan Wojciechowski and Chris Maranto were responsible for the Butler hits. The Bears were able to build a 2-0 lead off Butler miscues as the team posted three errors on the day.
Butler will return to Indianapolis to host Western Michigan this weekend. The three-game series may be held at Bishop Chatard H.S. after seeing snow in the area on Wednesday. Check back to ButlerSports.com for updates.
