Terre Haute, Ind. - A 12-run first inning by host Indiana State put the Bulldogs in an early hole they would be unable to dig themselves out of, as Butler dropped a 23-3 contest against the Sycamores on Wednesday (March 18) afternoon at Sycamore Field.
ISU erupted for 10 hits - including nine singles - to steadily build up a 12 run advantage through the first three outs of the contest.
Butler found itself down 19-0 before it broke up the shut-out in the top of the fifth. Steve Darragh plated the Bulldogs first run of the game, scoring from third on a wild pitch, before Luke Duncan and Rick Betsch added RBI singles to cap a three-run frame.
The Sycamores would earn two of the runs back in their half of the inning before closing out the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth.
Duncan finished with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate with a run scored and RBI.
Butler returns to action on Friday (March 20) when it opens up the Horizon League season against Valparaiso beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Bulldog Park.
