Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler baseball head coach Steve Farley announced the signing of a pair of right-handed pitchers during the Early Signing Period on Thursday (Nov. 20) afternoon. High school seniors Jared Earle and Joel Leichty signed National Letters of Intent to attend Butler and play baseball beginning in the 2009-10 season.
"With six senior pitchers graduating this spring, bringing in a couple of quality guys on the mound was a priority for us," Farley said. "We are excited about Jared and Joel coming into the program, and we still have several other top pitching prospects out there that have Butler very high on their list of schools."
A native of Crawfordsville, Ind., Earle earned first team all-conference and all-county honors and was named the team's MVP and captain as a junior in 2007-08. During that season, he led the Southmont High School team with five wins, two saves, a 2.18 ERA and 95 strikeouts while working a team-best 61 innings.
Leichty, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a three-year letterwinner at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy where he finished his junior season with a perfect 3-0 record and one save. Meanwhile, he helped the team to the conference championship all three years he has been on the squad.
"Both Jared and Joel have solid fastballs to go along with a good breaking pitch," Farley added. "Jared has the makings of a very effective change up, and we think Joel will be a fast learner as well. Both guys are hard workers and good team leaders.
"We are excited to have these guys coming to Butler and they will have a great opportunity next fall."
