Gordon Hayward Named Horizon League Player of the Week
Butler sophomore Gordon Hayward, who helped
lead the Bulldogs to a 74-66 victory over #13/15 Ohio State, has
been named Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
for the week ending Dec. 13. He’s the first Butler
player to be honored this season.
Hayward averaged 24.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in Butler’s two games against nationally-ranked opponents last week. He had 24 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a steal in a career-high 39 minutes against #15/13 Georgetown on Tuesday (Dec. 8) and then came back with 24 points and eight rebounds in 39 minutes against Ohio State on Saturday (Dec. 12).
The two games marked a season scoring high for Hayward, and it was the third time in his career that he has posted back-to-back 20-point scoring performances. He tied for game scoring honors in the Georgetown contest, and he led all scorers in the Ohio State game.
For the week, the 6-9 Butler guard hit 16 of 35 (.457) shots from the field and seven of 17 (.412) from beyond the three-point arc. He also connected on nine of nine free throw attempts, running his current streak of consecutive free throws made to 22 in a row.
Hayward ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring with a 16.9 average, and he’s second in the league in rebounding with an 8.2 mark. He’s the only player to rank among the top three individuals in both categories.
Butler (7-3, 1-0 Horizon League) will be in final exams this week, before returning to the court to host Xavier (6-3) on Saturday, Dec. 19. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
