Roosevelt Jones Earns League Honor
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Freshmen Roosevelt Jones, who helped lift
Butler to a pair of key road victories, has been named Horizon
League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week of
Feb. 6-12. He’s the first freshman to receive the
league’s weekly honor this season.
Jones averaged 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds, while shooting .526
(10-19) from the field, in Butler’s back-to-back victories at
Youngstown State and at Cleveland State. The two wins lifted
the Bulldogs to 15-12 on the year and 9-6 in Horizon League
action. Butler enters this week’s action in a three-way
tie with Detroit and Youngstown State for third place in the league
standings.
The 6-4 Jones posted 11 points and nine rebounds, while helping
Butler to a 68-59 victory at Youngstown State. He had a key
rebound and put-back midway through the second half to give Butler
a 44-38 lead, and the host Penguins never got closer than four
points the rest of the game.
Two days later, the first-year player from O’Fallon, Ill.,
scored a career-high 17 points, while leading the Bulldogs to a
52-49 victory at Cleveland State. He scored 11 points in the
first half to help Butler to a 28-18 halftime lead, and his final
point in the contest tied the game at 47-47 with under four minutes
remaining. He matched his career-high with seven free throws
against the Vikings, including five in a row in the first half.
Jones is averaging 7.7 points and 6.2 rebounds on the season, but
he’s averaged team-bests of 13.2 points and 9.4 rebounds over
Butler’s last five games. The Butler forward currently
leads the Bulldogs and ranks third in the Horizon League with 69
offensive rebounds. He had six offensive boards in
Butler’s two wins in Ohio.
Butler will host Loyola in a league game on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7
p.m. (ET), before taking a break from league play to participate in
Sears BracketBuster X at home on Saturday, Feb. 18. The
Bulldogs will host state foe Indiana State at 2 p.m. (ET) in the
