Andrew Smith Named A-10 Player of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Senior Andrew Smith, who helped Butler open the conference season with back-to-back road victories, has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period Jan. 7-13. He's the third Butler player to earn the honor in the Bulldogs' new conference.
Smith recorded his second double-double of the season and the sixth of his career with 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help Butler to a 72-66 win at conference preseason favorite Saint Joseph's to open the Atlantic 10 Conference season. He had 14 points and six rebounds in the final 20 minutes to help the Bulldogs secure the victory.
Three days later, the 6-11 center helped fuel a balanced team effort with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot in the Bulldogs' 79-73 win at Dayton. Smith hit a key three-point field goal and a pair of free throws in the final 6:20 to help Butler stave off a Dayton comeback attempt.
Smith, who joins teammates Rotnei Clarke and Roosevelt Jones as Butler players named conference Player of the Week, shot 54.5% (12-22) from the field, 50% (2-4) from three-point range and 78.6% (11-14) from the free throw line in the two wins. He averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists on the week. Butler improved to 10-0 this season when Smith scores in double-figures.
The two wins lifted Butler to 14-2 on the season and boosted the Bulldogs into a four-way tie for first place in the A-10 with a 2-0 mark. Butler enters this week's action with an 11-game winning streak.
The Bulldogs will begin a two-game homestand on Wednesday, Jan. 16, with a conference game against Richmond. That contest, the Bulldogs' first A-10 game in Hinkle Fieldhouse, will start at 7 p.m. (ET). Following the Richmond game, Butler will step out of conference play to host nationally-ranked Gonzaga on Saturday, Jan. 19.
