INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler center Andrew Smith has been named second team on the 2012-13 Men's Basketball Senior CLASS Award All-American Team. He was one of ten Division I basketball players honored as first or second team Senior CLASS Award All-Americans.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award is chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans.
Smith, who helped lead Butler to a 27-9 season and the third round of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, finished the 2012-13 campaign as the Bulldogs' leading rebounder (6.1 rpg) and second-leading scorer (11.3 ppg). He finished 25th on Butler's all-time scoring list with 1,147 career points, and he ended his career as one of only three players in Butler basketball history to record both 1,000 career points and 100 career wins.
The 6-11 center, who's an honor student majoring in finance, was named second team on the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America Team. He's also been active in a number of community service events as a member of the Butler basketball team throughout his collegiate career.
The selection of Smith marks the third consecutive year that Butler has had a player named as a Senior CLASS Award All-American. Butler's Matt Howard earned the honor in 2010-11, while Ronald Nored was chosen last year.
Jordan Hulls of Indiana was named the overall Senior CLASS Award winner.
