VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - Matt Howard scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and Willie Veasley had a career-high 15 points to lead No. 25 Butler to a 75-62 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday night.
Butler (12-1, 3-0 Horizon League), sparked by a three-point play by Howard, a pair of 3-pointers by Gordon Hayward 59 seconds apart and another basket inside by Howard, opened the second half with an 13-2 run to move ahead 44-33. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 52-37 when Shawn Vanzant hit a 15-foot jumper.
The Crusaders (4-10, 1-2) cut the lead to 59-53 when Jake Diebler hit a pair of free throws with 5:04 left. But Shelvin Mack, who scored 14, answered with a 3 to give Butler a nine-point lead again and the Crusaders never made another run.
Brandon McPherson led Valparaiso with 22 points and Urule Igbavboa added 17. Hayward had 15 for Butler.
