Butler seniors A. J. Graves and Drew Streicher have been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division Men's Basketball Team, chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The two Butler student-athletes were among 15 players chosen to the honor squad, and Butler was the lone university to have more than one player selected!
Graves was named Academic All-America for the second consecutive year. The 6-1 guard, who boasts a 3.35 grade point average as a mathematics and actuarial science major, was named to the second team of the Academic All-America squad this year, after earning first team Academic All-America recognition a year ago. Streicher, who boasts a 4.00 grade point average in Butler's MBA program, was selected to the Academic All-America third team.
The five players named first team Academic All-America this year were D. J. Augustin of Texas, Adam Emmenecker of Drake, Justin Hare of Belmont, Jack Leasure of Coastal Carolina and Brett Winkelman of North Dakota State. Joining Graves on the second team were Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois, Drew Neitzel of Michigan State, Joe Reitz of Western Michigan and Mike Schachtner of Green Bay, while Ryan Bright of Sam Houston State, Greg Paulus of Duke, Matt Nelson of Boise State and Alex Ruoff of West Virginia joined Striecher on the third team. Emmenecker was named Academic All-American of the Year.
Graves and Streicher have helped lead Butler to a 25-3 record and a "Top 25" national ranking in both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today basketball polls. Both players have been starters in all 28 Butler games this season. Graves currently ranks second on the team in scoring with a 14.0 average, and he leads the team in three-point field goals (82), steals (42) and free throw shooting (.870). Streicher is averaging 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds, while ranking third on the team in minutes played. The 6-8 forward, who graduated last spring with a 3.95 grade point average as a chemistry major, will enter medical school at Indiana University this fall.
A year ago, Graves became just the second Butler student-athlete to earn Academic All-America recognition in men's basketball, and Streicher is now the third. Butler's only previous Academic All-American in men's basketball was Chris Miskel, who was named to the third team of the 1994-95 honor squad.
