Butler head coach Brad Stevens continued a successful central Indiana recruiting run with the signing of 6-10 center Andrew Smith of Covenant Christian High School on the first day of the NCAA Fall Signing Period. Smith is the lone player the Bulldogs expect to sign during the fall period.
"We're really excited about the addition of Andrew Smith to the Butler basketball family," said Stevens. "He has demonstrated himself to be a high achiever both on and off the court throughout his high school career."
Smith averaged 14.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots, while shooting 63% from the floor last year. He helped Covenant Christian to a 15-7 season and to the Class 2A sectional finals. The 230-pound post player also had a strong summer performance as a member of the Indiana Premier AAU team.
"Andrew not only has great size and ability, but he combines that with very good basketball instincts and athleticism," added Stevens.
Smith will join a Butler team that already includes nine Indiana players. Stevens signed three talented central Indiana players, Gordon Hayward of Brownsburg, Garrett Butcher of Edgewood and Chase Stigall of New Castle Chrysler, a year ago, and all three went on to earn All-State recognition and a spot on the Indiana All-Star Team.
Butler is coming off a school-record 30-4 campaign that saw the Bulldogs ranked in the "Top 25" for 19 consecutive weeks. Stevens, who was in his first season as a head coach, guided Butler to a championship at the Great Alaska Shootout, regular season and tournament titles in the Horizon League and a first round win in the NCAA Tournament. This year's 14-player Butler team has no seniors and just four juniors.
