Butler freshman Gordon Hayward has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 8-14. The 6-8 forward helped the Bulldogs to a road victory at Bradley and a near-upset of #21 Ohio State.
Hayward averaged 22.5 point, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Butler's two games last week. He shot 58% (15 for 26) from the field, including a torrid 60% (12 for 20) from beyond the three-point arc, in the two outings.
Hayward shared Butler's scoring lead with 20 points at Bradley, while helping the Bulldogs to an 87-75 victory. He hit five of nine three-point field goal attempts in the game, while adding six rebounds, four assists and one steal in 31 minutes of action. It was the first 20-point scoring performance of his young career.
Three days later, Hayward picked up his second consecutive 20-point effort. He led all players with a career-high 25 points in Butler's 54-51 setback at Ohio State. He nailed a career-best seven of 11 shots from beyond the three-point arc, while adding seven rebounds, two assists and one steal in a career-best 38 minutes. The first-year player scored nearly half of Butler's points against the nationally-ranked Buckeyes!
Hayward leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring (13.3 ppg), rebounding (5.9 rpg), steals (1.6 spg), field goal shooting (.520), three-point field goal percentage (.511) and three-point field goals made per game (2.6).
Butler (8-1) will take a week off for final exams before returning to the court to host Florida Gulf Coast in a non-league game on Saturday, Dec. 20. That contest is slated for 2 p.m. (ET) at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
