VALPARAISO - The Butler football team got out to a 34-0 halftime lead and rolled to a 48-0 road win at Valparaiso. It was the Bulldogs' first shutout since 1998.
Junior Andrew Huck went 12-for-15 passing for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Senior Scott Gray had 87 yards rushing and a TD, and freshman Trae Heeter rushed for 82 yards and a score. Junior Zach Watkins led the receiving corps with eight catches for 92 yards.
Leading 10-0 after the first quarter, Butler put up 24 points in the second period to put the game away. After a 32-yard field goal by junior David Lang, the Bulldogs scored three touchdowns over a 5:40 span. The big play was a 73-yard scoring pass from Huck to senior Eddie McHale, while Gray and senior Matt Kobli added rushing touchdowns.
The Bulldogs (4-5, 2-4 PFL) scored twice more in the third quarter before sitting down the starters. Freshman Brendan Shannon caught a touchdown pass from Huck and Heeter ripped off a 64-yard TD gallop to make it 48-0 late in the third quarter.
Butler's defense stifled Valparaiso (0-9, 0-6 PFL), holding the Crusaders to 188 yards and 3.3 yards per play. Butler rolled up 483 yards of offense on 7.3 yards per play. Valpo managed just nine first downs.
Sophomore Jordan Ridley led the Bulldogs with eight tackles, while freshman Matt Benson had seven stops, including BU's only sack of the day. He had three tackles for loss, forced a fumble and batted down a pass. Senior Grant Hunter added two tackles for loss.
Butler returns home to host PFL co-leader Jacksonville Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Butler Bowl. Kickoff is at noon. It is BU's Senior Day and home finale. The regular season finale is at Drake Saturday, Nov. 13.
