Seniors Alex White and Rob Noel and junior Spencer Summerville have been named to the first team of the 2008 Academic All-Pioneer Football League team, while seniors Mike Bennett and Ryan Schmidtz and junior Derek Guggenberger were picked to the second team of the honor squad released by the league office.
Noel, Summerville and Schmidtz each were repeat selections. Noel, a secondary education major, earned second team recognition on last year's Academic All-PFL team, as did Summerville, also a secondary education major. Schmidtz, a biology major, was named to the first team of the Academic All-PFL squad in both 2006 and 2007.
Two of the six athletes, White and Summerville, previously were named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V team.
Noel, an offensive lineman, tied Butler's career record for games played with 44, including his final 22 as a starter. He was a team captain and honorable mention All-PFL lineman last fall. White, a finance major, finished the 2008 season as Butler's second-leading pass receiver with 32 catches for 335 yards and one touchdown. Summerville, who earned honorable mention on the All-PFL team as a defensive back last fall, finished second on the team with 66 tackles in 2008. He also finished second on the team in kickoff returns with 14 for 269 yards.
Bennett, a finance major and starting linebacker, finished third on the team in tackles with 61. He was a team captain and second team All-PFL selection, and he finished his career with 230 total tackles. Schmidtz, a defensive back, saw action in all 11 games in 2008 and in 33 games during his Butler career. He had five career pass interceptions, including one for 63 yards in 2008. Guggenberger, a starting linebacker and economics major, was Butler's leading tackler last fall with 85 total stops. He earned honorable mention on the All-PFL squad.
The six honored athletes were among 56 Butler football players named to the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll for 2008.
Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squad in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his institution.
