Butler football players Alex White and Spencer Summerville have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V University Division Football Team, chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The two were among 23 student-athletes named first team on the Academic All-District squad, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.
White, a senior wide receiver from Westfield, is an honor student majoring in finance. He's been named to the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll, the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll and has been named a Josten's Scholar-Athlete. He's currently third on the team in pass receiving with 21 receptions for 231 yards.
Summerville, a junior defensive back from Indianapolis, is a secondary education major who has had considerable success in the classroom and on the football field. He was selected second team PFL Academic All-League a year ago, while being named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll and the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He received Butler's One Play Warrior Award for special teams play in 2007, and he was named Butler's Newcomer of the Year in 2006. The Butler strong safety is currently second on the team in tackle (54), and he leads the team in kickoff returns (14 for 269 yards).
The 23 players named to the All-District V first team will be considered along with All-Academic picks from seven other districts for selection to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be released in November.
