Butler Wins Bulldog Florida Invitational
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FLA. -- Freshman Joey Arcuri claimed individual honors and Butler captured the team crown at the Bulldogs Florida Invitational, which concluded on Thursday, March 13. The title wrapped up Butler's spring break trip to Florida.
Arcuri grabbed the lead on the first day of the nine-team tournament at Windsor Parke Golf Club with a stellar two-under-par 70 and never let go. The first-year Butler player closed with a one-over-par 73 on Thursday and finished six strokes ahead of runner-up Scott Rogers of Savannah State. Arcuri's opening round effort was the only sub-par round of the tournament.
Butler came up with two additional "Top 10" individual finishes in the tournament. Sophomore Brigham Stewart posted rounds of 77 and 76 (153) and finished fifth in the final individual standings, while senior Matt Vitale tied for ninth with an 81 on the opening day and a 76 in the final round for a 36-hole total of 157.
Junior Andrew Eiler narrowly missed the "Top 10" with a two-day total of 158 (78-80). He wound up tied for 13th. Junior Logan Holt completed the scoring unit with rounds of 78 and 82 (160), good for a 17th place tie.
Sophomore Logan McBride, playing as a non-scoring individual, tied for 22nd place in the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 82 (164).
Butler, behind the strong start of Arcuri, shot a team score of 303 in the opening round to grab a five-stroke lead over Savannah State. The Bulldogs closed with a 305 for a team tournament total of 608, 14 strokes better than Savannah State. Navy (635) finished third, followed by Florida A & M (645), Eastern Illinois (657), Navy-Gold (660), Providence (666), Chicago State (678), Edward Waters (750 and Palm Beach Atlantic.
The Bulldogs will return to Indiana to host the Butler Spring Invitational at Prestwick Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, March 24-25.
