Butler Drops Soccer Exhibition At Eastern Illinois
Eastern Illinois tallied a goal midway through the second half
and that proved to be enough to lift the host Panthers to a 1-0
victory over Butler in an exhibition men’s soccer match at
Lakeside Field in Charleston, Ill., on Tuesday. The match was
the final tuneup for the Bulldogs, who will begin the 2009 campaign
at IPFW on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Jerry Maddi scored on a header off a cross from Kendal Spurgin at
56:16 to break a scoreless deadlock and eventually give the
Panthers the decision. The scoring play was one of five shots
on goal for the host squad.
Butler finished with a 22-13 advantage in shots in the match, but
Eastern Illinois goalkeepers Shailer Thomas and Sean Molony turned
away each of the Bulldogs’ five shots on goal.
Boris Gatzky and Michael Clayton
led the Butler attack with five shots and one shot on goal
each.
Head coach Kelly Findley used 25 players,
including three goalkeepers, in the match. Fabian
Knopfler started in goal and played a scoreless first
half, while Nick Hegeman and Nick
Powell split the second half in net.
The two squads played a 10-minute overtime period after the
regulation match and then finished the scoreless extra period with
a penalty kick shootout. Eastern Illinois prevailed in the
five-round shootout, 4-2, with Lucas Eichhorn and
Austin Evans scoring Butler’s goals
