Butler closed out its three-match exhibition slate in a big way with a convincing, 4-1, victory over Northwestern in a match played in Fort Wayne, Ind. The win left the Bulldogs with a 2-0-1 record for the three-match stretch.
The Bulldogs, who fell behind in the first 30 minutes, scored the final four goals of the match to defeat the team picked third in the Big Ten this season.
"We are very pleased with the overall team effort today," said Butler head coach Kelly Findley after the win. "Northwestern is a very good team, and it was a good test to prepare us for the season ahead. We look forward to the opener in the Butler Bowl on Wednesday."
Senior Ben Sippola tied the match at 1-1 with a goal, after taking a pass from freshman Austin Oldham. Another freshman, Adam Glanzer, scored the go-ahead goal with an assist credited to sophomore Blake Leyden. Sophomore Julian Cardona took a pass from sophomore Tyler Pollock and converted Butler's third goal, while senior Jacob Capito notched the final tally on a penalty kick.
Findley used goalkeepers Fabian Knopfler, Jon Dawson and Andy Holte in the match.
The Bulldogs will open the 2010 regular season at home on Wednesday, Sept. 1, against IPFW. The match will begin in the newly renovated Butler Bowl at 5 p.m.
