League-Leading Butler Visits Wright State
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler, boasting the best record in the
NCAA Division I, will be looking for a 12th consecutive win when it
visits Horizon League foe Wright State for a men's soccer
match on Saturday, Oct. 16. The contest at Wright
State's Alumni Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET) and will be
broadcast live on the Horizon League Network.
The #9-ranked Bulldogs, the last unbeaten, untied team in Division
I, improved to 11-0-0 on the season with a 5-0, non-league victory
over Bowling Green on Wednesday (Oct. 13). Five different
Butler players scored in the contest, which wrapped up the
Bulldogs' four-match homestand. The five goals matched
a season scoring-high for the Bulldogs, and the shutout was
Butler's sixth this season.
Senior Ben Sippola, who scored one of Butler's five goals
against Bowling Green, currently ranks second in the Horizon League
in points (19) and goals (7), and he's tied for first in the
league in assists (5). Sippola had the game-winner in
Butler's 3-1 victory over Wright State a year ago.
The Bulldogs, boasting a league-best 4-0-0 conference record,
continue to lead the Horizon League in points (87), goals (28),
assists (31), goals against average (0.44) and shutouts (6).
Goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler boasts a league-best (0.49) goals
against average, and he leads the league with five shutouts.
Knopfler yielded goal-keeping duties to sophomore Jon Dawson in the
Bowling Green match, and Dawson recorded a shutout in his first
collegiate start.
Butler's 11 consecutive victories represent the best season
start and the longest winning streak in school history.
Following the Wright State contest, the Bulldogs will play three
of their final five matches at home, beginning with a non-league
test against IUPUI on Wednesday, Oct. 20. That match at the
Butler Bowl will start at 3 p.m. (ET).
