INDIANAPOLIS - The Horizon League champion Butler men's soccer team will be the No. 13 seed in the 2010 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, which begins this week. The Bulldogs will have a first-round bye and a Sunday, Nov. 21 home match against the winner of Oakland and Michigan State.
It marks the first home NCAA Tournament soccer match in the history of the school, as well as the second year in a row that BU has captured a national seed. The Bulldogs were the tourney's No. 12 seed last year.
"It's a testament to what Kelly Findley has done here at Butler. He's put the program on the map nationally," Butler senior Ben Sippola said. "We couldn't be more thrilled to have a national seed."
"We're at home and have a first round bye. It's a great opportunity. I like our odds," head coach Kelly Findley said. "But Oakland and Michigan State are both very good teams."
Sippola was this year's Horizon League Player of the Year and he followed that by capturing MVP honors in the league tournament last weekend.
Butler is one of two unbeaten teams in the nation, along with the tourney's top seed Louisville. The Bulldogs have faced Oakland already this year, defeating the Golden Grizzlies 1-0 back on Sept. 18. Butler has faced Michigan State recently in the spring exhibition season.
Butler (16-0-3) has previously advanced to the NCAA tourney in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2009. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 6 in last week's NSCAA coaches poll as well as Soccer America.
