Bulldogs Fall At Ohio State
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Senior Austin McAnena scored his first three goals of the season and helped power host Ohio State to a 4-1 victory over Butler in a non-conference match at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 26). The setback snapped a three-match unbeaten streak for the Bulldogs.
McAnena gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the first half and then helped stretch that margin with a pair of goals in the final period. He tallied his first goal of the season at 31:54 and then made it 2-0 with just under three minutes gone in the second half. Both goals were unassisted.
The Ohio State midfielder scored his final goal at 70:25, after the Bulldogs (2-2-4) had trimmed the margin in half on a penalty kick by freshman Caleb Postlewait. That shot was created when junior Austin Oldham was taken down in the penalty box. It was Postlewait's first collegiate goal.
Ohio State (4-5-1) added a final goal at 83:16 on a penalty kick by Sage Gardner, his first goal of the season.
"I'm hugely disappointed," said Butler head coach Paul Snape after the match. "We just got out-worked. They won every 50/50 ball, and they were the first to everything. We were just sluggish tonight."
"We had some momentum and some confidence coming into this game. This gave us some reality."
The Buckeyes managed only a slim, 11-10, advantage in shots in the contest and just an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Oldham and freshman Jeff Adkins paced the Bulldogs with two shots apiece, with both of Adkins' attempts being on target.
Ohio State goalkeeper Alex Ivanov came up with six saves to spark the Buckeyes' defense. Junior Jon Dawson had four saves for the Bulldogs, while going the distance in net.
The match at Ohio State wrapped up Butler's pre-conference schedule. The Bulldogs will begin Atlantic 10 Conference play on Oct. 5 with a match at Dayton.
