Second Half Sinks Butler At Dayton
DAYTON, OHIO -- Butler's debut in the Atlantic 10 Conference was spoiled when host Dayton rallied for three goals in the second half and tagged the Bulldogs with a 3-1 setback at Baujan Field on Friday (Oct. 5) night. The match was the league-opener for both teams.
Dayton (7-2), ranked 30th this week by Top Drawer Soccer, scored a pair of goals in a two-minute stretch early in the second half to grab a 2-1 advantage and then added a third goal with just over six minutes remaining to seal the outcome. The Flyers improved to 6-0 on their home field this season.
Butler (2-3-4) grabbed the lead less than 20 minutes when junior Adam Glanzer gathered a corner kick from freshman Jeff Adkins in front of the goal and knocked a short shot past Dayton goalkeeper Chris Froschauer. It was Glanzer's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs maintained that advantage throughout the first half and took a 1-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.
But the Flyers answered on a penalty kick by Abe Keller just over six minutes into the final period and then took the lead for good on a goal by Maik Schoonderwoerd six minutes later. Andres Acevedo tallied the final Dayton goal at 83:52. It was the fourth goal of the season for both Keller and Acevedo, while Schoonderwoerd tallied his second goal.
Butler goalkeeper Jon Dawson had a busy evening and finished with a career-high nine saves. The Flyers launched 21 total shots, including 12 shots on goal. Butler, led by junior Blake Leyden, finished with 11 shots, including six shots on goal. Leyden had a team-high four shots, while Adkins added two, both on goal.
Butler's rugged league-opening road trip continues on Sunday, Oct. 7, when the Bulldogs visit No. 17 Xavier. The Musketeers lead the A-10 with an 8-0-2 record, including a 3-2 victory over Saint Louis on Friday. The match at the Xavier University Soccer Complex will start at 1 p.m. (ET).
