Butler Falls At No. 17 Xavier
Junior Jordan Burt

CINCINNATI, OHIO -- Senior defender James Queree broke a 1-1 deadlock with just over seven minutes remaining to lift No. 17 Xavier to a 2-1 victory over visiting Butler in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at the Xavier University Soccer Complex on Sunday (Oct. 7).  The match was the second conference contest for both teams.

The game-winner by Queree came just five minutes after Butler (2-4-4, 0-2 A-10) had tied the match on a goal by junior Jordan Burt.  The Butler midfielder gathered a clear attempt by Xavier at the top of the box and fired a shot to the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.  Queree's goal came from eight yards out on the left side of the goal off a crossing pass by Nick Hagglund.

"The difference today was what happened in the box, their box and our box," said Butler head coach Paul Snape after the match.  "They were a little tighter defensively, and in our box they were a little bit more ruthless.  There was just a small margin of difference.  It really was a great soccer match."

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 42 minutes of the match.  Xavier's Andrew Jordan ended that deadlock at 42:11 on a short shot to the right corner off a crossing pass from Matt Walker.  It was Jordan's third goal of the season and gave the unbeaten and nationally-ranked Musketeers (9-0-2, 2-0 A-10) a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

The two teams continued to battle toe-to-toe through the first 30 minutes of the final period, before Burt tied the match.  Xavier finished with a slight 12-11 advantage in shots and a six-four edge in corner kicks.  Butler goalkeeper Jon Dawson, coming off a career-high nine saves two nights earlier at Dayton, finished with five saves, including one at point-blank range in the closing minutes.

"It just came down to how you defend in your box and how you attack, and they were a bit better than us today," added Snape.

Butler will play its first home Atlantic 10 match on Friday, Oct. 12, against Richmond.  That contest at the Butler Bowl will start at 7 p.m. (ET).
