INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler went from not ranked in the national men's soccer polls to the "Top 10" in this week's Soccer America Men's Top 25. The Bulldogs appeared at No. 10 when Soccer America released its rankings for games played through Sept. 8.
Butler's rise in the national poll was fueled by a stunning 1-0 victory at then-No. 7 ranked Louisville on Saturday, Sept. 7. Freshman Anthony Smith Jr. scored the lone goal of the match in the 44th minute and junior goalkeeper Andy Holte recorded his first career shutout to spark the victory. The unbeaten Bulldogs (3-0-1) followed the win at Louisville with a 4-1 victory at home over Houston Baptist on Monday, Sept. 9.
Connecticut (2-0) claimed the top sport in the Soccer America poll, followed by BIG EAST foe Creighton (3-0), California (3-0), North Carolina (2-0-1) and Notre Dame (1-0-2). Saint Louis (3-0), New Mexico (2-0-1), UAB (3-0) and Clemson (4-0) joined Butler to round out the Top 10.
Butler is currently among the teams receiving votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division I Men's Top 25.
The Bulldogs will try to maintain their national standing with a pair of matches at the Northern Illinois Tournament, Sept. 13 & 15. Butler will face host Northern Illinois on Friday at 8:30 p.m. (CT), and then take on Northwestern on Sunday at noon.
